ANGER MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATION

ANGER MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATION:

Open Letter To All Interested

Richard Taylor is Director and Owner of Atlanta Anger Management.
He upholds the highest ethical practice principles.
Richard is an advocate for proper Anger Management training
that differs from psychotherapy and psychiatry.

You may want to read below for more information.

Feel free to e-mail or call 678-576-1913 to discuss or for information.

ANGER MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATION:

At this time (2018) there is no licensing requirement by the Georgia Secretary of State Office for Anger Management.

Anger Management and Domestic Violence (Family Violence) requires different Training and Certifications.

Domestic Violence / Domestic Family Violence laws do not apply to Anger Management.

Anger Management is not psychotherapy. Anger Management is psycho-education training and a highly personalized form of treatment. APA (LPC) Counselors take the same Certification Training* to offer Legitimate Anger Management Training to their client base that is Court Certified.

Anger Management does not seek to help those in need of counseling to find ways of avoiding their anger altogether. Identifying what makes you angry, how you feel about it, finding the source of your anger does not make you less angry.

According to the American Psychiatric Association, anger is a normal human emotion. It is not a mental disorder, consequently it is not responsive to traditional counseling, psychotherapy or psychotropic medication.

Anger is not listed in The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM5).

Anger Management is Psycho-Educational Coaching, Training, Teaching to educate the individual to the mechanism of anger, coping strategies to choose better behaviors for better outcomes. Learning about Stress Management, Improving Communication, Learning About Managing Conflict, Emotional Intelligence, and Cognitive Distortions helps individuals see that everyone can get angry. Healthy people know how to control anger so it doesn’t destroy their interpersonal relationships at home, work or out in public.

Court Certified Anger Management legitimate programs are designed to positively reduce offender recidivism and increase public safety.

SUGGESTED NUMBER OF CLASSES:

  • For Repeat Offenders 12 Classes over 12 weeks is suggested.
  • Severe Cases: 20-24 Hours Of Classes/once a week
  • For First Time Offenders depending on the severity of the charge: 8 to 12 Hours of Classes
  • For Minor Charges, you know the client is not guilty or it is not proven: 4 Hours Minimum of Classes
  • TIP: Using a check box for Anger Management on forms or assigning Anger Management without defining what is required, places the burden of determining the number of classes on the Anger Management Provider.

IMHO, I do not believe a One Hour Class provides enough contact for the person involved to learn anything to help themselves learn how to make better choices to not get arrested again. Hence the 4 Hour/4 Classes minimum suggested. 90% of people, blame others and do not accept responsibility for their actions. This shifts during our program and people experience that a good Anger Management Program is worthwhile.

Participants are assigned ‘One Class’ or ‘Take a Class’. This creates confusion as Our Anger Management Class is a minimum of 8 hours of material and often extends to 12 hours or more. You do not attend any higher learning class for one hour and get your Certificate of Completion. Think about that. That would be considered a “joke” of a program. I do see people who say they got set-up by their lying partners or lying strangers and a mired of other stories that blame others. I assume at least some are true. But One Hour Class?

Stop Drinking Diet Soda Benefits

SODA:

This week a few clients came in drinking sodas that seems to be a bit unusual these days.

With that observation I googled a bit and saw this. I use to drink 6-8 diet sodas a day
and after developing Type 2 Diabetes I quit. Now just water and coffee. And more water.

No sweeteners. Period.

With the things I did to address my health issues I no longer have Type 2 Diabetes. Getting fatter? Nothing seems to be working on the diet?

One thing to try….

8 Things That Happen When You Finally Stop Drinking Diet Soda

Prevention June 13, 2015

PDPics / Pixabay Used With Permission.

Every think, “Why should I give up soda?”  You’ve decided to give up diet soda—good idea! Maybe you weren’t hitting your weight-loss goals or couldn’t stomach that long list of ingredients anymore. Or perhaps you heard one too many times that it’s just not good for you.

Whatever the reason, eliminating diet soda from your diet will improve your health from head to toe. Research on diet soda is still in its infancy, but there’s enough out there to identify what you can look forward to when you put down the can and cool down with an unsweetened iced tea instead.

  1. Migraines disappear and focus sharpens.
It turns out the headaches you expected from a diet soda withdrawal didn’t materialize. And now that you’ve quit the stuff, you probably find yourself thinking clearly for the first time in a while. That’s because the chemicals that make up the artificial sweetener aspartame may have altered brain chemicals, nerve signals, and the brain’s reward system, which leads to headaches, anxiety, and insomnia, according to a review in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition. And a 2013 animal study found that rats that drank diet soda had damaged cells and nerve endings in the cerebellum—the part of the brain responsible for motor skills. (If you’re still drinking diet soda, take a look at what’s happening in your body right now.)
  2. Taste buds are more sensitive.
It’s not your imagination: Without your usual diet soda chaser, you may find that food has more flavor. It has subtlety. It’s more enjoyable. That’s because the artificial sweeteners in your diet soda overwhelmed your taste buds with an onslaught of sweetness. Aspartame ranks 200 hundreds times sweeter than table sugar. Splenda? 600 times. In fact, brain scans show that diet soda alters sweet receptors in the brain and prolongs sugar cravings rather than satisfies them. “We often see patients change snack choices when they give up diet soda,” says Heather Bainbridge, RD, from Columbia University Medical Center Weight Control Center. “Rather than needing sugary treats or something really salty like pretzels and chips, they reach for an apple and a piece of cheese. And, when they try diet soda again, they find it intolerably sweet.”
(Ready to eliminate harmful sugar from your diet for good—and lose weight for life? Check out the Sugar Smart Express!)
  3. The scale finally goes the right way.
While you may have started drinking diet soda to facilitate weight loss, quitting it may actually do the trick. A recent 9-year study found older adults who drank diet soda continued to pack on belly fat. The study piggybacks on research that found each daily diet soda increases your chance of becoming obese in the next decade by 65%, and a study published in Diabetes Care that found drinking diet soft drinks daily was associated with an increase in metabolic syndrome—obesity, high blood-pressure, high triglycerides—which leads to heart disease and diabetes.
  4. Bones strengthen.
Putting down the soda may be the best way to improve your bone strength and reduce your risk of fractures. One 2014 study found that each daily soda increased the chance of hip fracture by 14% for postmenopausal women. And another found that older women who drank cola had lower bone mineral density in their hips. The jury is still out on why soda has this effect, but the science pretty clearly suggests that a soda habit weakens your bones. (Diet soda’s not the only sugar-free food making you miserable—check out6 gross things that happen when you chew gum.)
  5. Your attitude towards food changes.
Since diet sodas have no calories, people drinking them often feel it’s okay to indulge elsewhere, finds Bainbridge. Often she sees her diet soda-drinking patients make poor food choices, like a burger and fries, a piece of cake, or potato chips, because they think they can afford those extra calories. Plus, soda often accompanies unhealthy foods. “Sometimes those poor choices are built up habits,” she says. “You’re conditioned to have soda with chips, fries, or something sweet. When you eliminate the soft drink, you also break the junk food habit.”
  6. You handle booze better
It’s a fact: Diet soda gets you drunk faster. When you mix it with alcohol, your stomach empties out faster than if you used regular soda, causing a drastic increase in blood alcohol concentrations, according to an Australian study in theAmerican Journal of Medicine. And when you add caffeine, look out. Another study in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Researchfound that bar patrons who mixed drinks with diet colas were intoxicated much more easily and frequently. Your best bet for a mixer? Club soda, which is naturally sugar- and calorie-free. (Try these slimming Sassy Water recipesto stay hydrated and make your taste buds happy.)
  7. Fat storage and diabetes risk decreases.
Our hormones may explain the great paradox of why people gain weight when they switch to diet soda. A study in Diabetes Carefound that drinking two-thirds of a diet soda before eating primed the pancreas to release a lot of the fat-storing hormone insulin. When the pancreas is overworked from creating insulin to control blood-sugar levels, diabetes rears its ugly head. And a recent study in Japan found that middle-aged men who drank 1 or more diet sodas daily were much more likely to develop type 2 diabetes over a 7-year period.
  8. Kidney function improves.
Now that your body no longer has to make sense of the unpronounceable ingredients in diet soda, your kidneys can get back to clearing toxins, stabilizing blood pressure, and absorbing minerals. One study looked at 11 years of data and found that women who drank 2 or more servings of diet soda doubled their chances of declining kidney function.

DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office Honored for Anti-Recidivism Program

DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office Honored for Anti-Recidivism Program

June 12, 2014

[Decatur, GA]
The DeKalb County Board of Commissioners recently honored the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office for creating a program dedicated to giving offenders ages 17 -25 a second chance. The Anti-Recidivism Court was created by District Attorney Robert James in December 2011. Since the program’s inception, 22 participants have successfully completed the program.

“This unique program offers young, first-time, non-violent offenders a second chance at life,” said James. “This program does not give them a ‘get out of jail free’ pass for their mistakes, but it allows them to learn from their prior missteps through a rigorous year-long program.”

The Anti-Recidivism Court is a collaborative partnership among DeKalb County Public Defenders’ Office, DeKalb County Magistrate Court and DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office.

According to national statistics, approximately two-thirds of individuals arrested will be re-arrested within three years. “The judicial system can become a revolving door for criminals. We wanted to deliberately interrupt the cycle of recidivism here in DeKalb through this program.”

Currently, 20 participants are enrolled in the year-long Anti-Recidivism Court.

As conditions of the diversion program, each participant is ordered to: report to private probation, perform community service, undergo random monitoring, report to monthly compliance hearings and abide by a curfew/electronic monitoring. Additionally, participants must pay any restitution involved with their arrest, enroll in an academic program if they have not obtained a high school diploma/GED and attend behavior modification classes.

“We focus on developing the person and providing them with the skills needed to be successful in life,” said James. “We not only provide them with life skills training but also a strict guideline to follow. Many do not complete the course .

For those participants who do complete all of their requirements, they will have their cases dismissed.”

If a participant is found in violation of the diversion program terms, then their case would be sent back to Superior Court for prosecution. “The program is not a fit for ever applicant,” said Diversion Program Director Kaleema Thomas. “The participants have to be committed to change and willing to work on themselves throughout the process.”

Atlanta Anger Management offers two such Lifeskills Courses.

  1. Anger Management Class
  2. Character Development Class

1. Anger Management Class

Anger Management is a course of treatment that seeks to help people whose anger emotion is causing negative problems in their personal, business or public life.

Anderson & Anderson’s Certified Anger Management Facilitators are influencing how anger management is practiced throughout the United States. Richard Taylor of Atlanta Anger Management sets the standard in Atlanta with many others following our lead. We offer what is needed and other companies soon copy us and offer it too. Two companies have even copied our name or derivatives thereof. Such flattery, thank you.

Anger Management has moved from the basic idea of management of anger to a broader understanding of the relationship between:

  • anger self-awareness
  • anger management
  • stress self-awareness
  • stress management
  • improving communication
  • increasing self-awareness
  • mindfulness
  • social awareness
  • impulse control
  • optimism
  • decision making
  • self-perception
  • flexibility
  • and relationship management

These lifeskills learned are positive by design and move the participant from low motivation into high motivation to commit to the process if they only honor their Pre-Trial Diversion Program requirements by completing the number of hours required.

♦ Unfortunately many get their Letter Of Enrollment attending their first class to (get off the hook) for their first Probation Meeting and then disappear into their past patterns that only lead to more trouble and eventual arrest ~ jail time for violation of their Agreed On Terms Of Pre-Trial Diversion Program.  Stricter penalties needed to be served for violation in our estimation.

Participants completing the Anger Management Class (Course) leave with enhanced life skills for greater self understanding (awareness), learn to control one’s emotions, better social awareness for better interactions and more productive relationship management.

In most cases reduced recidivism is also achieved.

NOTE: Anger Management is not psychotherapy. Anger Management is psycho-education and a highly personalized form of treatment using educational approach to skill development. Specialized Anger Management Certification Training of 40 Hours or more by national certification companies should be the standard for practice.

Anger Management does not seek to help those in need of counseling to find ways of avoiding their anger altogether. According to the American Psychiatric Association, anger is a normal human emotion. It is not a mental disorder, consequently it is not responsive to traditional counseling, psychotherapy or psychotropic medication. Additionally anger is not listed in The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) DSM-IV-TR.

Anger is exemplified by anger outbursts or tempers that flair out of proportion to the causing stimuli or situation. Anger can be aggressive as in verbal abuse or physical abuse but also passive as in emotional blackmail, negative control issues, silent treatment etc. The individual experiencing anger often lashes out against family members, friends, acquaintances coworkers, even strangers.

Anger is a problem under the following circumstances:

When it occurs too frequently
• When it is too intense
• When it lasts too long
• When it leads to health issues
• When it destroys interpersonal relationships: personal, work and public
• When it results in person-directed aggression: verbal abuse or physical abuse

Anger can be managed using skills/tools that can be learned through a course of proven Anger Management curriculum.

Atlanta Anger Management is offered in:

Minimally these classes are designed to teach core life skills in the following domains:

• Self Observing Self
• Anger Awareness and Anger Management
• Stress Awareness and Stress Management
• Improved Communication through Assertion Training & Active Listening
• Emotional Intelligence:
self-awareness, self control, social awareness and relationship management
• Relationship Management
• Cognitive Restructuring
• Learning to Respond To Another Person’s Anger
• Optimism and Gratitude

The first step is to call Richard at 678-576-1913 and we get to know one another. It is usually fairly brief but provides you the opportunity to discuss current situation and what some of the issues are and define your requirements as dictated by your referring party.

MEMORIAL DAY – National Moment Of Remembrance 3:00PM Local Time

MEMORIAL DAY

The National Moment of Remembrance encourages all Americans to pause wherever they are at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day for a minute of silence to remember and honor those who have died in service to the nation.

Official Birthplace Declared In 1966, Congress and President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, N.Y., the “birthplace” of Memorial Day. There, a ceremony on May 5, 1866, honored local veterans who had fought in the Civil War. Businesses closed and residents flew flags at half-staff. Supporters of Waterloo’s claim say earlier observances in other places were either informal, not community-wide or one-time events.

By the end of the 19th century, Memorial Day ceremonies were being held on May 30 throughout the nation. State legislatures passed proclamations designating the day, and the Army and Navy adopted regulations for proper observance at their facilities.

It was not until after World War I, however, that the day was expanded to honor those who have died in all American wars. In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by an act of Congress, though it is still often called Decoration Day. It was then also placed on the last Monday in May, as were some other federal holidays.

The crowd attending the first Memorial Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery was approximately the same size as those that attend today’s observance, about 5,000 people. Then, as now, small American flags were placed on each grave — a tradition followed at many national cemeteries today. In recent years, the custom has grown in many families to decorate the graves of all departed loved ones.

The origins of special services to honor those who die in war can be found in antiquity. The Athenian leader Pericles offered a tribute to the fallen heroes of the Peloponnesian War over 24 centuries ago that could be applied today to the 1.1 million Americans who have died in the nation’s wars: “Not only are they commemorated by columns and inscriptions, but there dwells also an unwritten memorial of them, graven not on stone but in the hearts of men.”

To ensure the sacrifices of America ’s fallen heroes are never forgotten, in December 2000, the U.S. Congress passed and the president signed into law “The National Moment of Remembrance Act,” P.L. 106-579, creating the White House Commission on the National Moment of Remembrance. The commission’s charter is to “encourage the people of the United States to give something back to their country, which provides them so much freedom and opportunity” by encouraging and coordinating commemorations in the United States of Memorial Day and the National Moment of Remembrance.

The National Moment of Remembrance encourages all Americans to pause wherever they are at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day for a minute of silence to remember and honor those who have died in service to the nation. As Moment of Remembrance founder Carmella LaSpada states: “It’s a way we can all help put the memorial back in Memorial Day.”
