EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE ASSESSMENT HELPS IMPULSE CONTROL

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE FOR IMPULSE CONTROL IS GAINING POPULARITY IN GEORGIA

Emotional Intelligence for “impulse control” is booming in California and New York.

In Georgia, awareness of Emotional Intelligence is waking up and is being used to help separate yourself from others in job interviews and for the employer to screen applicants from a wide choice of great candidates.

The key to this trend is the power of Emotional Intelligence Assessments in identifying low levels of competence in a number of skills (15 competencies in all) that are important in successful impersonal relationships and greater performance in life. Documentation shows it improves annual salaries and school performance in any Emotional Intelligence book.

EQ-i 2.0 Scales

EQ-i 2.0 Scales

An increase in self-referrals for skill enhancement coaching for “impulse control” is happening. Satisfied clients are referring friends and colleagues.  EQ coaching is becoming more popular with college students and young professionals wanting to improve themselves, wanting a better “edge” in the job market.

COACHING BY RICHARD L. TAYLOR
The key is to actually invest in the coaching component using the 21 page EQ-i 2.0 Assessment Report for the basis of SMART GOAL enhancement. Your Report is awesome, however, just like at the gym you need someone to hold you accountable and keep doing the improving work. It also makes it personal to your individual situation and problems.

Without coaching a person soon return to old habits that do not enhance their lives.

Case Example:

Let’s take a look at the results of coaching for this 21 year old  young man who had everything but positive emotional intelligence skills.  He was mandated by a court to take eight (8) classes of Anger Management after being arrested for punching a hotel casino manager in the face.  He took the Bar On EQ-i 2.0 Emotional Intelligence Assessment before he started his Anger Management program.  Once he received his results and saw how accurate they are, he decided to volunteer for Emotional Intelligence Coaching after he completed his required eight sessions of Anger Management.    He saw us once per week for five months.

We can conduct the Assessment anywhere in the world since it is an Online Assessment with 133 questions to answer. It takes 13-20 minutes to complete. The coaching can be done in person in Atlanta, GA or over phone or Skype.

  • Most immediate threats to survivors (in order of urgency): Lack of safe drinking water, no shelter, untreated injuries and illnesses, insufficient food, lack of sanitation and personal hygiene items, lack of household supplies like fuel

  • Population living on less than $2 per day: 2 in 5
  • Number of babies to be born in typhoon-affected areas this month: 12,000

DeKalb County Raising Awareness Over Domestic Violence

DeKalb County Raising Awareness Over Domestic Violence

Friday, Oct. 18, 2013

DeKalb County leads state in domestic violence deaths

DEKALB COUNTY, GA. —

DeKalb County leads the state in the number of women murdered in domestic violence incidents. Now, county leaders are taking steps to raise awareness and help give victims a way out.

Tamiko Lowery said at first it was emotional abuse, then it turned physical by her husband of three years. She’s now an advocate against domestic violence.

“I remember him hitting me. I don’t remember anything else after that. The next thing I know, I was in the middle of Interstate 85 with cars swerving around me,” Lowery said. “When you’re raised in that environment and you see it, you just don’t know how to get help.”

The same is true for Sabrina McKenzie whose husband of 20 years abused her and it ran in her family.

“My sister was murdered by her husband. She was stabbed 22 times in front of her kids,” McKenzie said.

Both women are survivors. And both are sharing their story in an effort to help others. Especially in DeKalb County.

Domestic violence deaths have increased in DeKalb in recent years. Last year, the county had the highest number of deaths in the entire state, which is why solicitor Sherry Boston said her number one priority is to get that number down.

“To know that I am here serving in a county where traditionally we are at the top at the list for the state of Georgia, it means that I know I have to work extra hard to get the message out,” Boston said.

Boston’s office is collecting cell phones to give victims the opportunity to call for help. And they’re getting businesses to help them.

“It’s hard when you have to hide even those emotional scars,” Boston said. “But when you think you can potentially save someone else’s life…”

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The Solicitor’s Office is having a symposium that’s open to the public to talk about the issue.

It’s on Thursday, Oct. 24 from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Manuel Maloof Auditorium in Decatur.

GEORGIA FREES JAIL SPACE WITH ANGER MANAGEMENT CLASSES

GEORGIA FREES JAIL SPACE WITH ANGER MANAGEMENT CLASSES

Georgia Judges are ruling in favor of criminal defendants who enroll in anger  management classes prior to arraignment in simple battery, battery, simple assault, assault, disorderly conduct, affray, terroristic threats cases of non-political/security nature,  child custody cases, divorce, and some family violence cases.

This strategy is designed to convince the courts to show leniency in favor or defendants who are able to demonstrate that they acknowledge the need of anger management and are moving proactively to seek improvement.

Current overcrowding in jails are also a factor in avoiding jail sentences in favor of rehabilitation through Pre-Trial Diversion Programs use of anger management classes and criminal defense attorneys and family attorneys suggesting proactive attendance in anger management classes before appearing in court before the judge.

Each Georgia County has different requirements for number of hours or weeks of required anger management classes usually ranging from 8-12 hours/weeks in Georgia.

At Atlanta Anger Management we have seen courts require from 1 hour up to 32 hours of Anger Management Classes. In my humble opinion the minimum should be 4 hours of anger management for a case of injustice where the court/prosecuting attorney knows the defendant should not have been arrested. This would allow enough time for the participant to learn some emotional intelligence skills in anger management, communication, and stress management that aids in better choices in decision making at home, work and public life. Often requiring an Anger Assessment Evaluation might be called for in cases like these. These are used to determine if any anger management classes are needed.

In Georgia, most clients take 8-12 hours of classes in anger management to fulfill court requirements. A few we have worked with have been ordered longer time frames.

There still seems to be a few Georgia Courts that do not understand what anger management is as compared to regular psychotherapy counseling for anger.

Anger Management uses psycho-education in classes using an approved/certified program with workbook teaching concepts, principles, and coping strategies to alter the participants beliefs and subsequent behaviors with better choices for better outcomes. This reduces recidivism and increases public safety if the participant uses what is learned. More…

Traditional Counseling often does not teach coping strategies using education based learning to address anger/violence issues and therefore is not effective helping such individuals. According to the American Psychiatric Association, anger is a normal human emotion. It is not a mental disorder, consequently it is not responsive to traditional counseling, psychotherapy or psychotropic medication. Additionally anger is not listed in The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) DSM-IV-TR.

AA type talk anger management groups often do not teach these type skills either so are not effective in reducing recidivism. Anger Management in the movies/TV is for entertainment not actually how anger management actually works.

Atlanta Anger Management is Atlanta’s #1 Oldest Certified Anderson and Anderson Provider offering a internationally/nationally recognized Anderson and Anderson™ Anger Management Curriculum with workbooks .

Atlanta Anger Management offer Anger Management Classes:

  • Monday
  • Tuesday
  • Wednesday
  • Thursday
  • Friday
  • Saturday to meet every court need.

Anger/Violence Assessment Evaluations are ordered for individuals the court determines may or may not need anger management classes. There are many Evaluations in use in Atlanta with the standard determined by the Certification Provider in most cases.

An accurate Assessment Evaluation can determine:

  • the proficiencies of the individual in the areas taught in anger management
  • family history of anger/violence
  • information regarding the actual incident that caused the arrest
  • communication style of participant
  • participant’s attitude in choices
  • empathy quotient
  • amount of stress
  • often impulse control

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE – Domestic Violence Hotline 1.800.334.2836

People call stating they need 24 hours of classes.

I ask them to check their paperwork to see if it states they need Family Violence (Domestic Violence) or Anger Management. Most often it will state Family Violence (Domestic Violence). Most states require 24 (26) weeks or longer for Domestic Violence. Other Domestic Violence descriptors used are: Family Violence, Batter’s Program.

As a service to the community I site the  Georgia Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

If you are a victim of Domestic Violence be careful and get help. If you the one doing domestic violence get help before you go to jail. Domestic Violence is not right. Act. Do Something. Do not commit violence. Read below.

ABOUT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

The abuse you or someone you know is experiencing or have experienced is not your fault.  Our network of domestic violence programs is here to help people stay safe.

What Is Domestic Violence?

Domestic violence is a pattern of abusive behavior or coercive control in any relationship that is used by one person to gain or maintain power and control over another.

Common Ways Abusers Gain or Maintain Power and Control

Often domestic violence can be subtle and can happen slowly in a relationship.  Anyone can be abused, and sometimes leaving can be very hard and dangerous due to the abuser’s actions.  Abusers gain or maintain power and control in many ways.  The more the abused person tries to pull away from the relationship, the more an abuser tries to gain and maintain power and control, often in more dangerous ways.  The following is a list of some ways in which someone abusing their partner people that abuse their partners try to gain and maintain power and control.

Domestic violence can be:

  • Emotional Abuse
    • calling their partner names like fat, ugly, stupid, crazy, sensitive or lazy
    • controlling their partner’s everyday life
    • blaming their partner when things go wrong
    • preventing their partner from talking to people that can help
    • humiliating their partner in public or when with friends and family
    • manipulating their partner
    • acting jealous and isolating their partner from friends and family
    • acting in ways that make their partner feel afraid
  • Psychological Abuse
    • brainwashing their partner or trying to make them confused about reality, “crazy-making”
    • secretly monitoring their partner through technology or other means so that the abuser seems to have omnipresence and know everything about their partner
    • forcing their partner to stay awake for long hours leading to chronic exhaustion
    • using religion or other belief system to promote or defend their abusive behavior
    • forcing children to engage in verbal or physical abuse of their partner
    • threatening to “out” their partner if they are gay or lesbian
    • threatening to have their partner deported if they are undocumented
    • switching from violent behavior to kind behavior in order to regain trust of their partner (and ultimately power and control over their partner)
  • Economic Abuse
    • controlling the family money
    • forcing their partner to give paychecks to the abuser
    • not allowing their partner to work, go to school or attend other activities that would promote economic independence
    • depriving their partner of money to pay for basic expenses, such as for personal hygiene items
    • trying to get their partner fired from work by calling repeatedly, showing up or starting conflict with their partner’s co-workers
    • taking away their partner’s passport, social security card, driver’s license or other documents so they are unable to establish independence, financial or otherwise
  • Sexual Abuse
    • causing their partner to be hurt during sex
    • forcing their partner to perform sexual acts
    • having affairs outside of the intimate relationship
    • forcing their partner to have sex for money
    • purposely infecting their partner with HIV/AIDS or a sexually transmitted illness (STI)
  • Physical Abuse
    • pinching, poking, slapping, biting, pushing, punching, strangling, burning or cutting their partner
    • forcing their partner to take drugs
    • hurting their partner’s pet
    • taking away their partner’s assistance devises, such as their TTY, glasses, medicine or ramp

This includes any behaviors that intimidate, manipulate, humiliate, isolate, frighten, terrorize, coerce, threaten, blame, hurt or injure someone.

Anyone can be abused, and the abuse is not the fault of the victim. Domestic violence can happen to anyone regardless of their class, religion, ethnic background, education, age, gender, disability status, sexual orientation, gender presentation, or immigration status.  Sometimes individuals being abused blame themselves for the abuse that is happening to them, but nothing that a person says or does justifies their partner’s use of violence.

Is It Abuse?

If you or someone you know is experiencing any of the abusive actions above, it could be a sign of domestic violence in the relationship.  Domestic violence is a pattern of abusive behaviors that some individuals use to control others in their family or home, and it tends to get worse over time.   If a victim’s partner has ever threatened them, physically harmed them or otherwise made their partner afraid for their safety, taking action to leave, separate or divorce may put a victim in greater danger. Please call Georgia’s 24-Hour domestic violence hotline, 1.800.33.HAVEN (1.800.334.2836) V/TTY to talk to an advocate about how to plan for safety or how you can assist a friend that may be experiencing domestic violence.

Domestic Violence Is Hard and Dangerous To Escape

The abuser in a relationship can make it very difficult or dangerous for a victim to find safety or leave a relationship.  Some of the tactics used above are repeated or intensified when a victim leaves.  In fact, a victim’s risk of getting killed by an abuser greatly increases when they are in the process of leaving or have just left a relationship.  If you are thinking of leaving a relationship or know of someone who is thinking about or trying to leave a relationship, please share the 24-Hour Statewide Domestic Violence Hotline number with them, 1.800.33.HAVEN (1.800.334.2836) V/TTY. A domestic violence advocate will answer the phone and can offer some plans for safety and other resources.

Common Feelings People Have When They Are Being Abused

A person that is abused may feel confused, depressed, alone, scared, hopeless, angry, wired, humiliated, tired, anxious or numb.  An abused person may feel nothing at all or flooded with a lot of emotions.  Some people that are abused have physical symptoms, such as headaches, stomach aches, skin problems or pain throughout the body.  Domestic violence advocates understand that being in an abusive relationship is hard and that leaving can be dangerous.  When you feel the time is right, you can call 1.800.33.HAVEN (1.800.334.2836) V/TTY to talk to a domestic violence advocate about how you are feeling and what you need to stay safe.  You do not have to handle abuse alone.

TESTIMONIALS (Anonymous From End Of Class Survey)

Richard is very funny and accommodates both young and older audiences. He understands and communicates very well. Today I learned I had an anger problem and Richard provided me with solutions. Thanks.

I found the class a very positive experience and provided insights to how anger works, that it can be used positively for good rather than be destructive aggressive anger. I learned about being intelligent with my emotions that I can choose better responses for better outcomes. I liked the instructor, Richard as he knew the material and was non judgmental towards everyone in the class. I was not forced to talk, but found myself participating as the material was engaging.

The class was very real and went straight to the point rather than beat around the bush. Real life stories of how people messed up making it easier for me to remember what Not To Do!

Today’s anger management class was one of the most positive things I have attended and participated in ever. Richard was very funny and open to us all attending and let us fully express ourselves as things came up. The teaching points just kept expanding layer upon layer and help me realize that EVERYONE should take this class. It was so uplifting and energizing.
I know that I will make better choices and never return. No more court ordered anger management for me!

I attended a class somewhere else and it produced very negative feelings in me. I felt accused, made to feel I was a bad person and had to admit I was the perpetrator. The fact was I was falsely accused and did nothing wrong. I am so glad I found Atlanta Anger Management. Richard was very positive and uplifting in his teaching methods. It was Anger Management, but the Anderson and Anderson curriculum was much much more. Skill enhancing information in so many areas, that I found myself enjoying the class and owning it and saying yes to the information as it was presented. I had a very good day. Glad it is over and worth the money. And now new skills to move forward. I will never be back. Richard stories reinforced that. Avoid precarious situations to avoid getting arrested.

This class was not what I expected. Started with some good coffee and immediately jumped into the material. As the day unfolded I could see that the material was really relevant to my life and I could use it in a practical way. I thought it was going to be a waste of time…but rather I felt energized by the material and Richard. I actually enjoyed myself. It was very valuable to me to attend a Saturday Class since my schedule is very busy with work and family demands. I thought it was easier to remember everything doing it in a one day class. Thanks.

I work outside and have a hard time sitting for long periods. It was great as the morning break came fast, then lunch, then afternoon break. So I did not have to sit any longer than 2 hours before I could check by phone for text message or voicemail. And got to stretch. The class material was easy to understand and with the DVDs made the day go by fast. I am glad to get this behind me.

Excellent information. Real Theory that you can really practice.

The instructor really knew his stuff. The day flew by and I was glad to get this behind me!

TESTIMONIALS

All the information was really helpful and useful. Richard did a great job of explaining and breaking the lessons down. The one day class was perfect for my situation due to time restraints.

I was surprised and actually like the class. I will not be coming back again!

A very helpful class. Learned things I can definitely use day to day.

It was a very laid back environment that made me feel accepted and more able to listen.
I enjoyed going over the material as Richard presented it. He made sure I understood the material.

The material was very defined and thorough. I particularly liked the self evaluating assessments that we did that help me realize my reactions to many events in my life.
As Richard said, this will give me a better handle on how to respond for better outcomes.

I like the Communication DVD and learning about spotting the different communication styles we all use. Should help me respond in a better way.

I like the One Day Class due to my working schedule. It was easier to understand the class lessons as everything flowed into the next chapter of info.

I learned how to better recognize and manage my frustration before it results in my usual anger.

Nice surprise. I thought I wouldn’t learn anything, and just do it for my probation. I actually did learn good anger control coping skills and learned I need to manage my stress better. The DVD’s were pretty good and help break up the class info. I am taking home a new attitude as a result of the class. I got my money worth.

Word of the day for me: Assertiveness

What I liked was how organized everything was. From my first email inquiry and fast response, to the subsequent follow up emails answering all my questions, the Details offered that told me everything I needed to know. Then the first part of the day, the following in the workbook, DVD’s, breaks, lunch, the facility….all surpassed my expectations. I am glad I chose Richard and his Atlanta Anger Management. It was worth the money even though I was falsely accused and got screwed by the system.

Learned that if I change my awareness of my anger response that it can be used for good rather than be destructive.

For me, this was a Divine appointment. I don’t have anger issues. But due to the police policy that someone has to get arrested it was me. I was not happy I was forced to attend this class. But after a few research Google searches I decided to attend to this class because of what I read about this class. I had to travel from over 60 miles to attend. I found it was definitely worth it. I was immediately affirmed upon arriving and opened up to Richard and his teaching style. He made me laugh and see that it is just as important to learn how anger and rage works to give me tools to respond better to other people’s anger. That was the insight. I work in a rather hostile combative work environment at a large company. Dog eat dog so to speak. This class gave me new insights and skills to deal better with the people I work with and leave my frustration at work and not dump on my husband when I get home. I am sure my husband will appreciate the new me. This is exactly what I needed.

I like being in a class with class participation. Made it interesting and I felt comfortable adding my input to class material. Richard even let me explain my knowledge of Meditation that was cool for me. ;-)

I am sick of being known as a hothead. The class will help me respond in a better way and let me become less reactive and explosive. I look forward to being the calm one.

I am writing a brief testimony about Richard Taylor’s anger management class. I attended his Saturday class, and it was a very beneficial class for me. I have always struggled with anger, but I was always able to control it. I finally let my anger get the best of me, and I got in trouble at work. I was very luck that I did not get fired. After attending Richard’s class, I was able to identify several tools to help me with my anger.

First, I was able to identify my triggers of my anger. I was also taught several tools to help control my anger. I have turned to regular exercise, taking controlled deep breaths, and excusing myself from a bad situation.

Everyone will deal with anger issues in different ways. I learned what would work best for me. I highly recommend his Saturday course. He has helped me to control my anger on a daily basis. His class will give you new insights to yourself and your anger issues.

It was great to be able to receive all the anger management information in one day due to my busy schedule, savings on gas and time. I find I do better with consolidated information learning situations rather than spread over eight weeks. Easier to retain/remember the information!

Sincerely, Steve

The class was not what I expected. I actually enjoyed it and learned something.

I liked that you told anger management stories from actual people you have seen as to what to NOT DO. Also that you had some DVD’s to watch that broke the day up.

Thanks. Hope to never see you again!

As Richard described depression and anxiety I realized I had the signs of depression. It was an
ah ha moment for me and explained why occasionally I got angry. The anger helped me get enough energy to do something and speak out. I now realized I was stuck in inaction mode. He called it Freeze. Like Fight, Flight, Freeze primal instincts. Made sense. Wow. I now have some coping skills to help myself get motivated and getting moving. I see some hope. I talked to Richard over lunch about my situation and he was open and made some suggestions that got me excited. Thanks Richard.

I enjoyed the class. That surprised me. Thanks.

Very interesting class. I learned a lot, not just about anger and managing those issues, but also behavior skills in stress management, that emotional intelligence can be learned to improve yourself and better communication skills while learning to fight fair.

Excellent information. Real Theory that you can really practice.

E-mailed to us:

Richard knew the material and made the time go by fast.

I liked that you told anger management stories from actual people you have seen as to what to NOT DO. Also that you had some DVD’s to watch that broke the day up.

FLORIDA BILL WOULD REQUIRE ANGER MANAGEMENT FOR AMMO BUYERS

Florida bill would require anger management courses for bullet buyers

By Joshua Rhett Miller

A Florida legislator wants anyone trying to buy ammunition to complete an anger management program first, in what critics say is the latest example of local lawmakers reaching for constitutionally-dubious solutions to the problem of gun violence.

The bill filed Saturday by state Sen. Audrey Gibson, D-Jacksonville, would require a three-day waiting period for the sale of any firearm and the sale of ammunition to anyone who has not completed anger management courses. The proposal would require ammo buyers to take the anger management courses every 10 years.

“This is not about guns,” Gibson said. “This is about ammunition and not only for the safety of the general community, but also for the safety of law enforcement.”

Gibson said she’s concerned with citizens stockpiling ammunition, potentially creating dangerous situations should those individuals ever come in contact with law enforcement agencies or criminals.

“It’s about getting people to think, really, about how much ammunition they need,” Gibson said. “It’s a step, I think, in a safer direction. It’s about getting people to think before they buy.”

“When I first saw it, I thought it had to be a joke.”

– Sean Caranna, executive director, Florida Carry

Gibson insisted the bill is not “accusatory” toward gun and ammunition owners, but rather an effort to improve the safety of her community. She recalled the death of a Jacksonville man, Jordan Davis, 17, who was fatally shot during a confrontation with another man in November. Michael David Dunn, 46, of Satellite Beach, has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the case.

Gibson first announced her intentions to introduce such legislation last month during a rally for Davis, saying “people are just not as patient as they used to be,” according to the Florida Times-Union.

“We see the rage on the road all the time,” she continued Wednesday. “People are just more impatient, I don’t know what it is.”

Gibson’s bill does not offer a threshold for the amount of ammunition needed to necessitate the need for anger management courses.

“It is unlawful to: A) Sell ammunition to another person who does not present certification that he or she has successfully completed an anger-management program consisting of at least 2 hours of online or face-to-face instruction in anger-management techniques,” the bill reads. “The certification must be renewed every 10 years. B) Purchase or otherwise obtain ammunition by fraud, false pretense, or false representation.”

Those in violation of the bill, if passed, would face a second-degree misdemeanor charge. Anyone found in violation a second time within a year of a prior conviction would face a first-degree misdemeanor charge.

Critics of the bill, however, derided the legislation as “absolutely ridiculous” and suggested that Gibson take a course on the U.S. Constitution.

“When I first saw it, I thought it had to be a joke,” said Sean Caranna, executive director of Florida Carry, a nonprofit group championing the right to bear arms. “They’re trying to say that anyone who owns a gun or shoots a gun or has ammunition for it needs counseling and obviously has some anger problems.”

Caranna said he was disappointed that Gibson wasted her time on the bill instead of focusing on other issues like jobs or the state’s rate of foreclosures, which is the highest in the nation.

“We’ve got a lot of issues that should be the focus of these bill slots with limited filing, but instead we put in something as ridiculous as this,” he said. “I don’t see a planet where this passes. This is an attempt to grab attention – it has to be. And that’s really disappointing.”

Jon Gutmacher, an Orlando attorney and author of “Florida Firearms: Law, Use & Ownership,” told FoxNews.com that the bill would almost certainly be found to be unconstitutional based on prior restraint.

“It has no reasonable relationship to anything,” he said. “There has to be a reasonable basis to believe that a person had a substantial anger problem that could cause public harm.”

Gutmacher said he found the bill to be an “insult” to any gun owner in the Sunshine State.

“It’s absurd on its face,” he continued. “And anyone who proposes that legislation is in my mind unfit for the legislature because it shows a basic problem with their thinking process, aside from their lack of understanding of what the Constitution is all about. That’s the kind of bill that doesn’t even get past committee.”

MY TAKE:

Two Hours Of Anger Management Instruction to affect change is ridiculous. Also why attach this to buying ammunition?
