Equanimity

Equanimity

Equanimity refers to a state of being calm and balanced, especially in the midst of difficulty.

In Buddhism, equanimity (in Pali, upekkha; in Sanskrit, upeksha) is one of the Four Immeasurables or four great virtues that the Buddha taught his disciples to cultivate.

  • compassion

  • loving kindness

  • sympathetic joy

  • equanimity

 

But is being calm and balanced all there is to equanimity?

And how does one develop equanimity?

Thich Nhat Hanh says (in The Heart of the Buddha’s Teaching, p. 161) that the Sanskrit word upekshameans “equanimity, nonattachment, nondiscrimination, even-mindedness, or letting go. Upa means ‘over,’ and iksh means ‘to look.’ You climb the mountain to be able to look over the whole situation, not bound by one side or the other.”

Standing in the Middle

Another Pali word that is translated into English as “equanimity” is tatramajjhattata, which means “to stand in the middle.” Gil Fronsdal says this “standing in the middle” refers to a balance that comes from inner stability; remaining centered when surrounded by turmoil.

We are constantly being pulled in one direction or another by things or conditions we either want or hope to avoid. These include praise and blame, pleasure and pain, success and failure, gain and loss. The wise person, accepts all without approval or disapproval.¹ – The Buddha

 

Cultivating Equanimity 

In her book Comfortable with Uncertainty, Tibetan Kagyu teacher Pema Chodron said, “To cultivate equanimity we practice catching ourselves when we feel attraction or aversion, before it hardens into grasping or negativity.”

This, of course, connects to mindfulness. The Buddha taught that there are four frames of reference in mindfulness:

1. Mindfulness of body (kayasati).
2. Mindfulness of feelings or sensations (vedanasati).
3. Mindfulness of mind or mental processes (cittasati).
4. Mindfulness of mental objects or qualities (dhammasati).

Here we have a really good example of working with mindfulness of feelings and mental processes. People who are not-mindful are perpetually being jerked around by their emotions and biases. But with mindfulness, you recognize and acknowledge feelings without letting them control you.
 
Pema Chodron says that when feelings of attraction or aversion arise, we can “use our biases as stepping-stones for connecting with the confusion of others.” When we become intimate with and accepting of own feelings, we see more clearly how everyone gets hooked by their hopes and fears. From this, “a bigger perspective can emerge.”
 
Thich Nhat Hanh says that Buddhist equanimity includes the ability to see everyone as equal. “We shed all discrimination and prejudice, and remove all boundaries between ourselves and others,” he writes. “In a conflict, even though we are deeply concerned, we remain impartial, able to love and to understand both sides. [The Heart of the Buddha’s Teaching, p. 162].” I confess, that last one is really difficult for me, but that’s what we are called to do.

THE PRACTICE:
Catch yourself feeling a “HIT” or ACTIVATION”.

Notice it.

Talk to yourself called Self-Talk.

Say: ” Remain Calm. Breathe.”

Listen with empathy (Empathetic Listening) trying to hear the other person’s points. Try to understand the underlying feelings that are driving the words spoken. Is it fear, frustration, misdirected pent up stress? What is it?

Remain silent. Try to remain neutral. Try for either being Neutral or Nice. Refrain from Nasty.

These are the 3 N’s. = Nasty/Neutral/Nice.

If flooded with feelings and you feel like yelling or being nasty…say “I am taking a 10/20/30 minute break and will discuss this when we are both calm. Please allow me to take this break without chasing me. How about you calm down too. ”

Discuss things when you are calm.

Choose to cooperate and then compromise or harmonize.
 
REFLECT/EVALUATE:

How did I do? What could I do better next time?

Form a plan for next time. Say “Next Time I will_________________”

ROAD RAGE IS…

Road Rage is often called intermittent explosive disorder, a term used to refer to violent incidents resulting from stress caused by accidents or incidents on roadways. It is often a natural extension of aggressive driving.

Road Rage frustration and aggression are often triggered by traffic conditions, being in a hurry, stress related to other pressures. Road Rage is a feeling of retaliating of awlfulizing the other driver. The other driver deserves retribution. We make a free choice in what we do. We choose how we are going to respond.

∇ Getting ‘worked up” driving?

∇ Find yourself saying not nice things called Expletives?

∇ Driving definitely causing you a lot of stress?

Road Rage:

  • Occurs when a driver reacts angrily to other drivers
  • You cut off another driver
  • Tailgating
  • Gesturing or waving fist.
  • Flip off someone
  • Aggressive driving
  • Excessive speeds
  • Scream at another
  • Chase another car
  • Honk continuously at another car
  • Make threatening gestures
  • Try to injure or kill another driver
  • Name what you do: _______________

Road Rage is an symptom of an underlying issue with a driver. Impulse Control is a major issue. They are unable to remain in control of themselves or their emotions. Often stress is very high in your life. Perhaps your personal or business life is not going very well. Your anger spreads beyond driving creeping into other aspects of your life.

Choose to Calm Down and disengage from your stress.

 

For drivers who do not experience Road Rage knowing what might trigger a person is equally important.

 

Do not “flip off” someone with your middle finger. They may have a pistol in hand waiting for an excuse. Some people may just not like your look. Your race. Your hair color.

 

Atlanta has now become an aggressive driving city with too many cars and not enough roads.

 

Vote for more MARTA, High Speed Trains, Other Public Transportation ideas when they come up in Voting. Use MARTA when you can.

 

WHEN DRIVING:

  • Be calm
  • Listen to soothing music
  • Slow down
  • Take more time to get to your destination and expect delays
  • Plan your driving trip before you drive so you know where you are going. Use Google maps.
  • Plan to arrive 20 minutes early so if traffic bad you are not stressed
  • Become a better driver
  • If you have anxiety while driving take a driver education course in defensive driving
  • Be courteous while driving
  • Make appointments in non traffic times
  • Stop multi-tasking while driving
  • Stop talking on phone while driving
  • Stop looking at your phone while driving
  • Practice holding the steering wheel with two hands so your other hand does not auto multi-task
  • Allow a car beside you to get ahead of you when lane narrows
  • When a driver cuts in front of you abruptly, let it go and expect that again
  • Drive with 360 degree awareness paying attention to all sides, front, back, left, right (Zen Driving)
  • Anticipate traffic incidents with attentive awareness “reading” the traffic ahead of you
  • Practice Positive Self Talk and say things like “Calm Down” “I feel Calm” “No big deal”
  • Do not use expletives like idiot, stupid, asshole, *uck you, *ucker, Mother*ucker
  • Do not use expletives like _____________ _______________ _____________
  • Arrive safely to live another day

  • Don’t let things build up, Use Assertion Skills to address issues as you go along

  • Try to sense down to the softer emotions beneath anger, like hurt or fear; acknowledge those to yourself or express them to others.

  • Ask your heart for guidance.
  • Practice Positive Thinking; catch negative thoughts and change the channel to positive thoughts

Georgia Points and Points Reduction

Point System

The Georgia Point System ranges from 2 to 6 points. A driver with 15 points in a 24 month period will be suspended.

Points are assessed for each conviction pursuant to O.C.G.A. §40-5-57(c)(1)(A)

The State assesses no points for speeding convictions less than 15 miles-per hour over the posted speed limit and for convictions of driving ‘Too Fast for Conditions’, as per O.C.G.A. §40-6-180. No points are assessed against non-residents of Georgia.

Points Reductions

How do I obtain a Points Reduction?

In accordance with O.C.G.A §40-5-86, licensed Georgia residents may request that DDS reduce the number of points assessed against their Georgia driver’s license up to 7 points once every 5 years.

To qualify for a Points Reduction, you must successfully complete a certified Driver Improvement (defensive driving) course and present the original certificate of completion to the DDS by mail or in person at one of our Customer Service Centers.

If you request a Points Reduction by mail, please mail the original Driver Improvement (defensive driving) certificate of completion to the Georgia Department of Driver Services, P. O. Box 80447, Conyers, Georgia 30013.

A new kind of road hazard is Aggressive Driving that can become Road Rage.

When driving watch for:

  • aggressive drivers who weave in and out of traffic
  • drivers who tailgate (follow too closely)
  • drive too fast on crowded highways
  • honk the horn frequently
  • drive with no regard for other drivers and their vechicles
  • drivers who cut you off
  • drivers who brake very fast – you might read end them
  • drivers who “squeeze’ in front of 18 wheel trucks
  • scream at you
  • obscene gestures
  • drivers who try to get you to talk to them while driving
  • drivers who change lanes when you do and seem to be chasing you
  • drivers who get in front of you and slam their brakes on

Today’s hectic, over crowded, fast-paced world, frustration levels are sky high, stress piles on with increasing number of people expressing this as angry driving.

Avoid Road Rage consequences with these tips:

  • aggressive and excessive speeding, particularly on congested highways
  • aggressive and excessive speeding in bad weather
  • speed causes nearly 1/3 of all fatal motor vehicle crashes
  • speeding reduces the time drivers have to avoid a crash or a dangerous situation and greatly increases the likelihood the crash will be severe.
  • The energy released in a collision at 60 mph is 200 percent greater than at 40 mph, even though the speed has increased by only 50 percent.

Control Yourself

  • Wind down before you crank it up
  • Avoid making other drivers angry by avoiding anger yourself
  • Anticipate situations and make plans accordingly.
  • Regular traffic reports in most cities alert you to the traffic congestion.
  • Allow extra driving time to remain stress free.
  • Learn alternate routes.
  • Find ways to relive daily stress such as Working Out (Exercise), Pilates, Meditation, Laughter Yoga, Conscious Breathing, Singing, taking Hot Baths at night.
  • If you plan a long road trip, take it in 8 to 10 hour stages.
  • Every three hours driving take a rest stop break.

Be Patient & Pay Attention – Avoid A Driving Assault

  1. Don’t yell or use obscene gestures.
  2. Don’t block the passing lane.
  3. Stay to the right if you are obstructing the flow of traffic.
  4. Always signal when changing lanes.
  5. Use your horn sparingly.
  6. Don’t tailgate.
  7. Cooperate
  8. Don’t compete on the road.
  9. Let other drivers merge into traffic in an orderly fashion.
  10. Don’t take another’s actions personally. Everybody makes mistakes.
  11. Don’t react to another driver’s uncivil behavior
  12. Avoid eye contact
  13. Don’t accelerate, brake or swerve suddenly, which can be seen as confrontational.
  14. If confronted by an aggressive driver, go to the nearest police station if you continue to be hassled or think you are being followed.
  15. Lock your doors.
  16. When stopped in traffic, leave enough space to pull out from behind the car you are following.
  17. Don’t be tempted to start a fight or carry any sort of weapon. These acts may provoke an assault.

GEORGIA FREES JAIL SPACE WITH ANGER MANAGEMENT CLASSES

Georgia Judges are ruling in favor of criminal defendants who enroll in anger  management classes prior to arraignment in simple battery, battery, simple assault, assault, disorderly conduct, affray, terroristic threats cases of non-political/security nature,  child custody cases, divorce, and some family violence cases.

This strategy is designed to convince the courts to show leniency in favor or defendants who are able to demonstrate that they acknowledge the need of anger management and are moving proactively to seek improvement.

Current overcrowding in jails are also a factor in avoiding jail sentences in favor of rehabilitation through Pre-Trial Diversion Programs use of anger management classes and criminal defense attorneys and family attorneys suggesting proactive attendance in anger management classes before appearing in court before the judge.

Each Georgia County has different requirements for number of hours or weeks of required anger management classes usually ranging from 8-12 hours/weeks in Georgia.

At Atlanta Anger Management we have seen courts require from 1 hour up to 32 hours of Anger Management Classes. In my humble opinion the minimum should be 4 hours of anger management for a case of injustice where the court/prosecuting attorney knows the defendant should not have been arrested. This would allow enough time for the participant to learn some emotional intelligence skills in anger management, communication, and stress management that aids in better choices in decision making at home, work and public life. Often requiring an Anger Assessment Evaluation might be called for in cases like these. These are used to determine if any anger management classes are needed.

In Georgia, most clients take 8-12 hours of classes in anger management to fulfill court requirements. A few we have worked with have been ordered longer time frames.

There still seems to be a few Georgia Courts that do not understand what anger management is as compared to regular psychotherapy counseling for anger.

Anger Management uses psycho-education in classes using an approved/certified program with workbook teaching concepts, principles, and coping strategies to alter the participants beliefs and subsequent behaviors with better choices for better outcomes. This reduces recidivism and increases public safety if the participant uses what is learned. More…

Traditional Counseling often does not teach coping strategies using education based learning to address anger/violence issues and therefore is not effective helping such individuals. According to the American Psychiatric Association, anger is a normal human emotion. It is not a mental disorder, consequently it is not responsive to traditional counseling, psychotherapy or psychotropic medication. Additionally anger is not listed in The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) DSM-IV-TR.

AA type talk anger management groups often do not teach these type skills either so are not effective in reducing recidivism. Anger Management in the movies/TV is for entertainment not actually how anger management actually works.
