1. Don’t Worship Stuff

Many people grow up thinking they need stuff to be happy. We often confuse our wants with our needs, and convince ourselves we “need” a big house, a fancy car, and everything else in between.The more we have, the more successful we feel. The problem, however, is that stuff costs money — money we might not have.

In his book, The Total Money Makeover: A Proven Plan for Financial Fitness, Ramsey nails it when he says, “We buy things we don’t need with money we don’t have to impress people we don’t like.” Ain’t that the truth.

Some of us become so obsessed with keeping up that we sacrifice our future financial health and willingly go into debt just so others will think we’re successful and can afford a certain lifestyle. However, the joke’s on us because this type of thinking gets us nowhere financially — and fast.

The best thing you can do for your money is stop worrying about the opinions of others and realize stuff doesn’t make you happy or richer. Ramsey encourages “living substantially below your means.” Just because you make $75,000 a year doesn’t mean you have to spend $75,000 a year. Simplicity is key to acquiring financial freedom.

2. Build a $1,000 Emergency Fund — Now

According to Ramsey, this is the first step to financial stability. This doesn’t suggest you can’t have more in your emergency fund. Like many other financial experts, Ramsey speaks about the importance of having a sizable cash cushion — at least three to six months of income. But since this takes time, Ramsey’s Financial Peace University program recommends baby steps and starting with a $1,000 emergency fund.

This ensures enough cash to handle life’s curveballs, so you don’t have to rely on credit cards. This might come as a shock, but building a small emergency fund takes priority over paying off debt (although you’ll still need to make minimum debt payments while growing a small emergency fund).

Do whatever you can to build this emergency fund. For example, sell stuff you don’t need at a yard sale, work overtime, or get a side hustle. The idea is to fund this account as soon as possible. You’ll enjoy peace of mind knowing you can handle an emergency, and it’s only after building an emergency fund that you can start improving other areas of your personal finance.

3. Don’t Be a Slave to a Lender

We live in a world where anything can be financed — from electronics to houses. And some people fall in the trap of thinking they can afford something as long as they’re able to make the minimum payments.

Ramsey’s financial philosophy revolves around living debt-free. He’s a big believer in not carrying any type of debt, including an auto loan and a mortgage. In fact, he says he would rather ride a bike than take out a car loan.

In his book, Financial Peace Revisited, Ramsey says, “We want it all, and we can borrow to get it all, before we can afford it all.” For some, getting a loan or credit card has never been easier. But the more debt you have, the more you have to work, and the less money and time you’ll have to enjoy your life.

Once you have a small emergency fund, Ramsey says it’s time to tackle your non-mortgage debt. Not just your credit card debt — all of your debt. He feels that debt-free living isn’t just about paying off revolving debt, but also paying off student loans and car loans.

He recommends the debt snowball method, in which you pay off your smallest balance first. You’ll make large payments toward this debt every month, while making the minimum payments on all your other debts. After you get rid of the smallest balance, take the money you were using to pay off this balance and apply it to the next smallest balance, and so on. You’ll eventually pay off your debts, at which point you can start increasing your $1,000 emergency fund, aiming for three to six month’s worth of income.

After paying off debt and building a “real” emergency fund, Ramsey puts the focus on your mortgage and encourages paying off this debt as fast as you can. Becoming mortgage-free might feel like a stretch, but since you don’t have other debts hanging over your head, you’re able to increase your mortgage payments without breaking a sweat and pay off this debt years sooner.

That’s the American dream if I’ve ever heard of it.

Of all the many achievements over the course of Paul’s career, this may be the most remarkable. For one, even those close to the Dalai Lama’s inner circle find it difficult to schedule time with that ceaseless world traveler. For another, when Richard Davidson and I were considering which scientists to invite to participate in the Mind and Life meeting on “Destructive Emotions,” we had misgivings about Paul, despite his being at the top of our list.

Our hesitation had to do with Paul’s tough-mindedness as a scientist – we were unsure what his chemistry might be with the Dalai Lama – and we know that beyond first-class science, personal rapport made these meetings work. And, as Paul has said himself, at first during the meeting he had his own doubts. But on the third day there was a personal encounter with Paul and the Dalai Lama – when Paul introduced his daughter Eve, and the Dalai Lama held on to Paul’s hand as they spoke.

There was an almost electrical charge, as Paul has put it – and a subsequent deep change in Paul’s being. Where he had been quick to anger, as Paul describes, after that encounter he didn’t even have an angry thought for about nine months.

While most of us can’t hope for such a drastic inner transformation, any of us can begin the inner journey toward more peace and clarity.  As for myself, I find that meditation has offered a way to renew that state daily.

Cultivating Emotional Balance offers a range of approaches to emotional hygiene. There are countless methods.

But as the Dalai Lama emphasizes, that’s a first step. By also enhancing our own compassion, we become better able to act in ways that will add our energy to the force for good he calls us to create.

About Cultivating Emotional Balance

Cultivating Emotional Balance is a research project, which arose from a dialogue between biobehavioral scientists studying emotion and the Dalai Lama, Buddhist monks, and scholars at the Mind and Life Institute in Dharamsala, India in March of 2000. This meeting was one in a series sponsored by the Mind and Life Institute to foster an interchange between Buddhist tradition and Western science.

At this meeting, the Dalai Lama asked scientists if they could conduct research to determine whether or not secularized Buddhist practices would be helpful to Westerners dealing with “destructive” emotional experiences. In response to this request, Dr. Paul Ekman and Dr. B. Alan Wallace, developed a training program that integrated Buddhist contemplative practices with Western techniques for dealing with negative emotional experiences. The training’s purpose is to reduce emotional responses that are destructive to self and others and enhance compassion and empathy. This research project, “Cultivating Emotional Balance In Challenging Times” (CEB), is the result of that interchange.

Over the centuries, Buddhism has refined meditation methods which probe the nature of the mind and promote positive states of mind, including compassion. Decades of scientific research has been conducted on altruism, empathy, pro-social behavior, and other concepts that relate directly to compassion. However, there are almost no studies in scientific literature that have found any form of training or intervention that can increase compassion. In fact, there is no agreed upon definition of compassion in the scientific literature.

In these challenging times, the development of methods for “cultivating emotional balance” and promoting compassion for others is a tremendously important scientific and humanitarian goal. By integrating wisdom derived from two very different traditions, the CEB project investigators hope to contribute to this important goal.

ROAD RAGE IS…

Road Rage is often called intermittent explosive disorder, a term used to refer to violent incidents resulting from stress caused by accidents or incidents on roadways. It is often a natural extension of aggressive driving.

Road Rage frustration and aggression are often triggered by traffic conditions, being in a hurry, stress related to other pressures. Road Rage is a feeling of retaliating of awlfulizing the other driver. The other driver deserves retribution. We make a free choice in what we do. We choose how we are going to respond.

Road Rage is an symptom of an underlying issue with a driver. Impulse Control is a major issue. They are unable to remain in control of themselves or their emotions. Often stress is very high in your life. Perhaps your personal or business life is not going very well. Your anger spreads beyond driving creeping into other aspects of your life.

Choose to Calm Down and disengage from your stress.

 

For drivers who do not experience Road Rage knowing what might trigger a person is equally important.

 

Do not “flip off” someone with your middle finger. They may have a pistol in hand waiting for an excuse. Some people may just not like your look. Your race. Your hair color.

 

Atlanta has now become an aggressive driving city with too many cars and not enough roads.

 

Vote for more MARTA, High Speed Trains, Other Public Transportation ideas when they come up in Voting. Use MARTA when you can.

 

WHEN DRIVING:

  • Be calm
  • Listen to soothing music
  • Slow down
  • Take more time to get to your destination and expect delays
  • Plan your driving trip before you drive so you know where you are going. Use Google maps.
  • Plan to arrive 20 minutes early so if traffic bad you are not stressed
  • Become a better driver
  • If you have anxiety while driving take a driver education course in defensive driving
  • Be courteous while driving
  • Make appointments in non traffic times
  • Stop multi-tasking while driving
  • Stop talking on phone while driving
  • Stop looking at your phone while driving
  • Practice holding the steering wheel with two hands so your other hand does not auto multi-task
  • Allow a car beside you to get ahead of you when lane narrows
  • When a driver cuts in front of you abruptly, let it go and expect that again
  • Drive with 360 degree awareness paying attention to all sides, front, back, left, right (Zen Driving)
  • Anticipate traffic incidents with attentive awareness “reading” the traffic ahead of you
  • Practice Positive Self Talk and say things like “Calm Down” “I feel Calm” “No big deal”
  • Do not use expletives like idiot, stupid, asshole, *uck you, *ucker, Mother*ucker
  • Do not use expletives like _____________ _______________ _____________
  • Arrive safely to live another day

Just one sip of beer, wine, or whisky hangs out in your body for about 2 hours. Once it quickly enters your bloodstream, it touches down on nearly every organ and system in your body.

Thanks to its job breaking down toxins, your liver bears the brunt of heavy drinking. But even if you don’t imbibe enough to cause cirrhosis—the dangerous liver scarring that marks the final stage of alcohol-induced liver disease—your bar nights may start taking their toll on your health. Moderate drinking—about two servings per day for men—brings a slew of health benefits, from lowering your risk for diabetes to boosting your creativity. But if you start to overdo it, alcohol can certainly have negative effects. Here’s what happens in your body when you throw down more than a few.

  1. Your Brain

Contrary to popular belief, alcohol doesn’t actually kill your brain cells, says David Sack, M.D., CEO of addiction-treatment company Elements Behavioral Health.

But hooch does alter levels of neurotransmitters, the chemical messengers that control your mood, perception, and behavior, he says.

Alcohol impairs brain areas such as the cerebellum—the control site for your balance and coordination—and your cerebral cortex, which is responsible for thinking, memory, and learning, says Kimberly S. Walitzer, Ph.D., deputy director of the University at Buffalo’s Research Institute on Addictions.

Plus, University of Michigan researchers found the amygdala—an area of the brain involved in fear and anger—showed less of a reaction to threatening faces after a single drink, potentially explaining why you’re prone to risky behavior (like fighting a bouncer) under the influence.

  1. Your Skin

Sure, beer goggles may make other people appear hotter—but booze doesn’t do your own mug many favors. Alcohol dilates blood vessels on your face, making them more prone to breakage.

This gives you bloodshot eyes and worsens a ruddy-skinned condition called rosacea, says dermatologist David E. Bank, M.D., of Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center.

Your heart pumps more fluid into surrounding tissues to balance out those alcohol-widened arteries and veins, leaving you with a bloated, puffy face.

  1. Your Muscles

Hit the gym as hard as you want—if you hightail it to the bar afterward, you may never get the arms you want. (And by the way, here’s 25 Ways To Build Your Biceps.)

Alcohol tinkers with your hormonal and inflammatory responses to exercise, making it more difficult for your body to repair damaged proteins and build new ones (essential steps in getting ripped), according to a recent review in the journal Sports Medicine.

You’ll compound this effect if you reach for a beer before a recovery snack or shake, says study author Matthew Barnes, Ph.D., of Massey University in New Zealand.

So take the time to get some protein, carbohydrates, and non-boozy fluids into your system post-workout before cracking open your first cold one.

  1. Your Heart

Moderate drinking might protect your ticker due to the blood vessel-relaxing polyphenols that alcohol contains or by raising your levels of HDL, (“good” cholesterol), says researcher Kirsten Mehlig, Ph.D., of the University of Gothenburg in Sweden.

But her recent study in the journal Alcohol suggests these effects may only benefit the 15 percent of the population with a certain genetic profile affecting HDL levels. It’s too soon to recommend genetic testing to guide your alcohol consumption, she points out.

Meanwhile, those same two drinks per day can raise your risk of atrial fibrillation by 17 percent, according to a study in theJournal of the American College of Cardiology.

This type of irregular heartbeat approximately quadruples your risk of having a stroke and triples your risk of heart failure.

  1. Your Stomach

Just one night of bingeing—that’s five drinks or more for guys in about 2 hours—increases what’s called your gut permeability, according to University of Massachusetts Medical School researchers.

Harmful toxins and bacteria leak from your digestive system into your bloodstream, prompting a dangerous immune-system response that can eventually lead to liver disease and other health problems.

At lower doses, alcohol irritates your stomach, increases acidity, and relaxes the muscle at the end of your esophagus, causing heartburn, Dr. Sacks says.

  1. Your Penis

Having as few as five drinks a week decreases your sperm count and percentage of healthy swimmers, perhaps by affecting levels of sex hormones like testosterone, Danish researchers recently reported in the journal BMJ Open.

And while you may find a glass of vino sets the mood, anything more than that could wreck your performance in the bedroom, Dr. Sacks says.

Almost three-quarters of men with alcohol dependence have at least one sexual health issue, such as low desire, erectile dysfunction, or premature ejaculation, say Indian researchers.

Continuing from yesterday Post on RESPECTING PARTNER’S PERSONAL “SPACE”

When emotions continue to run high when having a discussion or argument and cannot be resolved (STUCK) then it time time to use PROBLEM SOLVING.

Problem-Solving: Use when stuck or emotions run high.
1. Define The Problem – Write out on paper.
2. Generate Solutions (Brainstorming- no idea is dismissed) Pen to paper.
3. Make a Decision – Synergize (combine ideas) and choose action to take. Document. Pen to paper.
4. Implement Decision – Assign action steps, responsibilities and deadline for completion. Pen to paper.
5. Evaluate Outcome – Important. Set Date. If necessary follow up with corrections, further plans. You may need to revisit any of above steps or if nothing works come see me.

The National Moment of Remembrance encourages all Americans to pause wherever they are at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day for a minute of silence to remember and honor those who have died in service to the nation.

Official Birthplace Declared In 1966, Congress and President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, N.Y., the “birthplace” of Memorial Day. There, a ceremony on May 5, 1866, honored local veterans who had fought in the Civil War. Businesses closed and residents flew flags at half-staff. Supporters of Waterloo’s claim say earlier observances in other places were either informal, not community-wide or one-time events.

By the end of the 19th century, Memorial Day ceremonies were being held on May 30 throughout the nation. State legislatures passed proclamations designating the day, and the Army and Navy adopted regulations for proper observance at their facilities.

It was not until after World War I, however, that the day was expanded to honor those who have died in all American wars. In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by an act of Congress, though it is still often called Decoration Day. It was then also placed on the last Monday in May, as were some other federal holidays.

The crowd attending the first Memorial Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery was approximately the same size as those that attend today’s observance, about 5,000 people. Then, as now, small American flags were placed on each grave — a tradition followed at many national cemeteries today. In recent years, the custom has grown in many families to decorate the graves of all departed loved ones.

The origins of special services to honor those who die in war can be found in antiquity. The Athenian leader Pericles offered a tribute to the fallen heroes of the Peloponnesian War over 24 centuries ago that could be applied today to the 1.1 million Americans who have died in the nation’s wars: “Not only are they commemorated by columns and inscriptions, but there dwells also an unwritten memorial of them, graven not on stone but in the hearts of men.”

To ensure the sacrifices of America ’s fallen heroes are never forgotten, in December 2000, the U.S. Congress passed and the president signed into law “The National Moment of Remembrance Act,” P.L. 106-579, creating the White House Commission on the National Moment of Remembrance. The commission’s charter is to “encourage the people of the United States to give something back to their country, which provides them so much freedom and opportunity” by encouraging and coordinating commemorations in the United States of Memorial Day and the National Moment of Remembrance.

The National Moment of Remembrance encourages all Americans to pause wherever they are at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day for a minute of silence to remember and honor those who have died in service to the nation. As Moment of Remembrance founder Carmella LaSpada states: “It’s a way we can all help put the memorial back in Memorial Day.”

ATLANTA RATES #2 IN LEAST COURTEOUS DRIVERS

AutoVantage Survey on Road Rage Identifies Atlanta as 2nd Least Courteous City in the US

Stamford, CT- May 12, 2014

When it comes to getting to and from work, a recent survey says Atlantans have it worse than citizens in just about any other city.

The 2014 In the Driver’s Seat Road Rage Survey identified Atlanta as having the second least courteous drivers across America’s largest cities. This represents an “increase” of two spots from the same survey in 2009.

Rankings were determined by measuring a wide array of driving actions that inhabitants admit to performing and acknowledge seeing, along with observations of their reactions to other drivers.

When compared to drivers in other cities, survey participants in Atlanta are:

  • Most likely to admit purposely bumping another driver in reaction to perceived poor driving
  • Most likely to see another driver speeding
  • Most Likely to acknowledge tailgating someone else
  • 2nd most likely to see other drivers eating or drinking while behind the wheel

While drivers in Atlanta were identified as among the least courteous, Portland, OR was identified as having the most courteous drivers.

ROAD RAGE IS

Road Rage is an symptom of an underlying issue with a driver. Impulse Control is a major issue. They are unable to remain in control of themselves or their emotions. Often stress is very high in your life. Perhaps your personal or business life is not going very well. Your anger spreads beyond driving creeping into other aspects of your life.

Road Rage: Choose to Calm Down and disengage from your stress.

For drivers who do not experience Road Rage knowing what might trigger a person is equally important. Do not flip someone your middle finger. They may have a pistol in hand waiting for an excuse. Some people may just not like your look. Your race. Your hair color.

Atlanta has now become an aggressive driving city with too many cars and not enough roads. Vote for more MARTA, High Speed Trains, Other Public Transportation ideas when they come up in Voting. Use MARTA when you can.

WHEN DRIVING:

  • Be calm
  • Listen to soothing music
  • Slow down
  • Become a better driver
  • Plan your trip and know where you are going
  • If you have anxiety while driving take a driver education course in defensive driving
  • Take more time to get to your destination and expect delays
  • Be courteous while driving
  • Make appointments in non traffic times
  • Stop multi-tasking while driving
  • Stop talking on phone while driving
  • Stop looking at your phone while driving
  • Allow a car beside you to get ahead of you when lane narrows
  • When a driver cuts in front of you abruptly, let it go and expect that again
  • Drive with 360 degree awareness paying attention to all sides, front, back, left, right (Zen Driving)
  • Anticipate traffic incidents with attentive awareness “reading” the traffic ahead of you
  • Arrive safely to live another day

ANGER MANAGEMENT TIP : Love Others

If we choose to love more each day our anger will dissolve.

Love comes from the heart. As Valentine’s Day is upon us we see a lot of heart symbols on everything. Besides buying flowers, exchanging cards, getting large teddy bears, eating chocolate just maybe the real meaning to Valentine’s Day is to remind us to reach out of ourselves and actually learn to love another person well. To give them what all humans want: To be loved.

I always wondered why I give on Valentine’s but almost never received. Is it women want but don’t give? Is it tradition? I always felt loved. Yes and that was enough.

Lesson 3: Give without expectation
That works perfectly for Valentines and every day after.

I learn to give love without expectation.

Jesus told us to love unconditionally. To love those who insult you, love those who hate you. Maybe even love those who are angry with you! Tip: Remain silent and do not return their energy as it emboldens the aggressive person. Things get worse then. It is so hard to be silent. Impulse Control. Most angry people do not have any Impulse Control. So this is a profound teaching to us angry folks. Impulse Control is a key to good Anger Management. Mmm…be silent.

Jesus two commandments were: Love God And Love Your Neighbor. Simple right? Well most of us forget both.

Anger Management Tip:
Please consider this Valentine Day and each day after to practice the art of loving from the heart with intention. To give love without expectation. To smile at another without expecting anything in return. To practice random acts of kindness. To practice changing our negativity to positive thoughts and actions.

To let love flow through us. With intent we do not try to hold onto love. It is meant to be like a river….as it flows out more flows in to replace it. If we hold onto it, love becomes stagnant like a pond that needs draining.

So with intention I try to reach out to love others without expecting anything back. As I do so each day anger and other negative emotions dissolve and come up less.

This is good anger management. Love. Love without expectation.
