DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AGAINST MEN

Domestic Violence Against Men

Revised: May 31, 2013

Statistics About Domestic Abuse And Violence Against Men

Very little in known about the actual number of men who are in a domestic relationship in which they are abused or treated violently by women.  In 100 domestic violence situations approximately 40 cases involve violence by women against men.  An estimated 400,000 women per year are abused or treated violently in the United States by their spouse or intimate partner.  This means that roughly 300,000 to 400,000 men are treated violently by their wife or girl friend.

For more information see www.dvmen.org  |  http://www.ejfi.org/DV/dv.htm

Why Do We Know So Little About Domestic Abuse And Violence Against Men?

There are many reasons why we don’t know more about domestic abuse and violence against men.  First of all, the incidence of domestic violence reported men appears to be so low that it is hard to get reliable estimates.  In addition, it has taken years of advocacy and support to encourage women to report domestic violence. Virtually nothing has been done to encourage men to report abuse.  The idea that men could be victims of domestic abuse and violence is so unthinkable that many men will not even attempt to report the situation.

The dynamic of domestic abuse and violence is also different between men and women.  The reasons, purposes and motivations are often very different between sexes.  Although the counseling and psychological community have responded to domestic abuse and violence against women, there has been very little investment in resources to address and understand the issues of domestic abuse and violence against men.

In most cases, the actual physical damage inflicted by men is so much greater than the actual physical harm inflected by women.  The impact of domestic violence is less apparent and less likely to come to the attention of others when men are abused.

For example, it is assumed than a man with a bruise or black eye was in a fight with another man or was injured on the job or playing contact sports.  Even when men do report domestic abuse and violence, most people are so astonished men usually end up feeling like nobody believes them.

The Problem With Assumptions About Domestic Abuse And Violence

It is a widely held assumption that women are always the victims and men are always the perpetrators.   Between 50 and 60% of all domestic abuse and violence is against women.   There are many reasons why people assume men are never victims and why women often ignore the possibility.  For one thing, domestic abuse and violence has been minimized, justified and ignored for a very long time.   Women are now more organized, supportive and outspoken about the epidemic of domestic abuse and violence against women.  Very little attention has been paid to the issue of domestic abuse and violence against men – especially  because violence against women has been so obvious and was ignored for so long.

What Is Domestic Abuse And Violence Against Men?

There are no absolute rules for understanding the emotional differences between men and women. There are principles and dynamics that allow interpretation of individual situations.

Domestic abuse and violence against men and women have some similarities and difference.

For men or women, domestic violence includes:

  • pushing
  • slapping
  • hitting
  • throwing objects
  • forcing or slamming a door
  • striking the other person with an object
  • using a weapon
  • can also be mental or emotional.

However, what will hurt a man mentally and emotionally, can in some cases be very different from what hurts a woman.  For some men, being called a coward, impotent or a failure can have a very different psychological impact than it would on a women.  Unkind and cruel words hurt, but they can hurt in different ways and linger in different ways.  In most cases, men are more deeply affected by emotional abuse than physical abuse.

For example, the ability to tolerate and “brush off” a physical assault by women in front of other men can in some cases reassure a man that he is strong and communicate to other men that he can live up to the code of never hitting a woman.

A significant number of of men are overly sensitive to emotional and psychological abuse.  In some cases, humiliating a man emotionally in front of other men can be more devastating than physical abuse.  Some professionals have observed that mental and emotional abuse can be an area where women are often more “brutal” than men.  Men on the other hand are quicker to resort to physical abuse and they are more capable of physical assaults that are more brutal – even deadly!.

Why Does Domestic Abuse Against Men Go Unrecognized?

Domestic violence against men goes unrecognized for the following reasons:

  • The incidence of domestic violence against men appears to be so low that it is hard to get reliable estimates.
  • It has taken years of advocacy and support to encourage women to report domestic violence. Virtually nothing has been done to encourage men to report abuse.
  • The idea that men could be victims of domestic abuse and violence is so unthinkable to most people that many men will not even attempt to report the situation.
  • The counseling and psychological community have responded to domestic abuse and violence against women. Not enough has been done to stop abuse against women.  There has been very little investment in resources to address the issues of domestic abuse and violence against men.
  • In most cases, the actual physical damage inflicted by men is so much greater than the actual physical harm inflected by women.  The impact of domestic violence is less apparent and less likely to come to the attention of others.
  • Even when men do report domestic abuse and violence, most people are so astonished, men usually end up feeling like nobody would believe them.  It is widely assumed than a man with a bruise or black eye was in a fight with another man or was injured on the job or while playing contact sports.  Women generally don’t do those things.

What Are The Characteristics Of Women Who Are Abusive And Violent?

The characteristics of men or women who are abusive fall into three categories.

  • Alcohol Abuse.  Alcohol abuse is a major cause and trigger in domestic violence.  People who are intoxicated have less impulse control, are easily frustrated, have greater misunderstandings and are generally prone to resort to violence as a solution to problems. Women who abuse men are frequently alcoholics.
  • Psychological Disorders.  There are certain psychological problems, primarily personality disorders,  in which women are characteristically abusive and violent toward men.   Borderline personality disorder is a diagnosis that is found almost exclusively with women.  Approximately 1 to 2 percent of all women have a Borderline Personality disorder.  At least 50% of all domestic abuse and violence against men is associated with woman who have a Borderline Personality disorder. The disorder is also associated with suicidal behavior, severe mood swings, lying, sexual problems and alcohol abuse.
  • Unrealistic expectations, assumptions and conclusions.   Women who are abusive toward men usually have unrealistic expectations and make unrealistic demands of men.  These women will typically experience repeated episodes of depression, anxiety, frustration and irritability which they attribute to a man’s behavior.  In fact, their mental and emotional state is the result of their own insecurities, emotional problems, trauma during childhood or even withdrawal from alcohol.   They blame men rather than admit their problems, take responsibility for how they live their lives or do something about how they make themselves miserable.  They refuse to enter treatment and may even insist the man needs treatment.   Instead of helping themselves, they  blame a man for how they feel and believe that a man should do something to make them feel better. They will often medicate their emotions with alcohol.  When men can’t make them feel better, these women become frustrated and assume that men are doing this on purpose.

A Common Dynamic:  How Violence ERUPTS

There are a number of commonly reported interactions in which violence against men erupts.

Here is one example that illustrates a common dynamic.

The woman is mildly distressed and upset. The man notices her distress and then worries she may become angry.   The woman attempts to communicate and discuss her feelings.  She wants to talk, feel supported and feel less alone.   She initially attributes some of her distress or problems to him.  The man begins to feel defensive, shuts down emotionally and attempts to deal with the problems rationally.  He feels a fight is coming on.  The woman feels uncared for, ignored and then gets angry.  She wants him to share the problem and he doesn’t feel he has a problem.  The man will attempt to remain unemotional and stay in control of himself.  He avoids accepting any blame for how she feels.  He is also worried that she may explode at any moment and that she will certainly do so if he talks about his feelings. The man will start talking about her problem as if she could feel better if she would only listen to him and stop acting so upset.  He fails to understand how she feels and tries to remain calm.  He tells her to calm down and ends up looking insensitive.  She begins to wonder if he has any feelings at all.  She tells him that he thinks he’s perfect.   He says he is not perfect.  She calls him insensitive.  He stares at her and says nothing but looks irritated.

The woman is frustrated that he won’t reveal his feelings and that he acts like he is in control.  On the other hand, the man feels out of control and like there is no room for anybody’s feelings in the conversation but hers. Communication breaks down and the woman begins to insult the man.  When the man finally expresses his disapproval and attempts to end the fight.  The woman becomes enraged and may throw something.  The man will usually endure insults and interactions like this for weeks or months.  This whole pattern becomes a recurrent and all too familiar experience.   The man becomes increasingly sensitive to how the woman acts and becomes avoidant and unsupportive.  The man begins to believe that there is nothing he can do and that it may be all his fault.  His frustration and anger can build for months like this.

This risk of violence  increases when the woman insults the man in front of their children, threatens the man’s relationship with his children, or she refuses to control her abusive behavior when the children are present.  She may call him a terrible father or an awful husband in front of the children.  Eventually he feels enraged not only because of how she treats him, but how her behavior is harming the children.   At some point the man may throw something, punch a wall, or slam his fist down loudly to vent his anger and to communicate that he has reached his limits. Up till now she has never listened to what he had to say.  He decides that maybe she will stop if she can see just how angry he has become.  Rather than recognizing that he has reached his limits, expressing his anger physically has the opposite effect.  For a long time the man has tried to hide his anger.  Why should the woman believe he really means it?  After all, he has put up with her abuse for a long time and done nothing.  Instead of realizing that things have gotten out of control, the woman may approach him and say something like, “What are you gonna do.  Hit me?  Go ahead.  I’ll call the police and you’ll never see your children again.”  Once he expressed his anger physically, the situation became dangerous for him and for her.

The door to violence has opened wide. He should walk away. When he does walk away, she ends up more angry than ever, will scream obscenities at him and strike him repeatedly.  She may even strike him with an object.

Why Do Men Stay In Abusive And Violent Relationships?

Men stay in abusive and violent relationships for many different reasons.  The following is a brief list of the primary reasons.

  • Protecting Their Children.  Abused men are afraid to leave their children alone with an abusive woman.  They are afraid that if they leave they will never be allowed to see their children again.  The man is afraid the woman will tell his children he is a bad person or that he doesn’t love them.
  • Assuming Blame (Guilt Prone).  Many abused men believe it is their fault or feel they deserve the treatment they receive. They assume blame for events that other people would not.  They feel responsible and have an unrealistic belief that they can and should do something that will make things better.
  • Dependency (or Fear of Independence).  The abused man is mentally, emotionally or financially dependent on the abusive woman.  The idea of leaving the relationship creates significant feelings of depression or anxiety.  They are “addicted” to each other.

Who Can Help If You Are In An Abusive or Violent Relationship?

Help for men who are victims of domestic abuse and violence is not as prevalent as it is for women.  There are virtually no shelters, programs or advocacy groups for men.

Most abused men will have to rely on private counseling services.  Community resources for breaking the cycle of violence are scarce and not well developed.

GEORGIA FREES JAIL SPACE WITH ANGER MANAGEMENT CLASSES

GEORGIA FREES JAIL SPACE WITH ANGER MANAGEMENT CLASSES

Georgia Judges are ruling in favor of criminal defendants who enroll in anger  management classes prior to arraignment in simple battery, battery, simple assault, assault, disorderly conduct, affray, terroristic threats cases of non-political/security nature,  child custody cases, divorce, and some family violence cases.

This strategy is designed to convince the courts to show leniency in favor or defendants who are able to demonstrate that they acknowledge the need of anger management and are moving proactively to seek improvement.

Current overcrowding in jails are also a factor in avoiding jail sentences in favor of rehabilitation through Pre-Trial Diversion Programs use of anger management classes and criminal defense attorneys and family attorneys suggesting proactive attendance in anger management classes before appearing in court before the judge.

Each Georgia County has different requirements for number of hours or weeks of required anger management classes usually ranging from 8-12 hours/weeks in Georgia.

At Atlanta Anger Management we have seen courts require from 1 hour up to 32 hours of Anger Management Classes. In my humble opinion the minimum should be 4 hours of anger management for a case of injustice where the court/prosecuting attorney knows the defendant should not have been arrested. This would allow enough time for the participant to learn some emotional intelligence skills in anger management, communication, and stress management that aids in better choices in decision making at home, work and public life. Often requiring an Anger Assessment Evaluation might be called for in cases like these. These are used to determine if any anger management classes are needed.

In Georgia, most clients take 8-12 hours of classes in anger management to fulfill court requirements. A few we have worked with have been ordered longer time frames.

There still seems to be a few Georgia Courts that do not understand what anger management is as compared to regular psychotherapy counseling for anger.

Anger Management uses psycho-education in classes using an approved/certified program with workbook teaching concepts, principles, and coping strategies to alter the participants beliefs and subsequent behaviors with better choices for better outcomes. This reduces recidivism and increases public safety if the participant uses what is learned. More…

Traditional Counseling often does not teach coping strategies using education based learning to address anger/violence issues and therefore is not effective helping such individuals. According to the American Psychiatric Association, anger is a normal human emotion. It is not a mental disorder, consequently it is not responsive to traditional counseling, psychotherapy or psychotropic medication. Additionally anger is not listed in The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) DSM-IV-TR.

AA type talk anger management groups often do not teach these type skills either so are not effective in reducing recidivism. Anger Management in the movies/TV is for entertainment not actually how anger management actually works.

Atlanta Anger Management is Atlanta’s #1 Oldest Certified Anderson and Anderson Provider offering a internationally/nationally recognized Anderson and Anderson™ Anger Management Curriculum with workbooks .

Atlanta Anger Management offer Anger Management Classes:

  • Monday
  • Tuesday
  • Wednesday
  • Thursday
  • Friday
  • Saturday to meet every court need.

Anger/Violence Assessment Evaluations are ordered for individuals the court determines may or may not need anger management classes. There are many Evaluations in use in Atlanta with the standard determined by the Certification Provider in most cases.

An accurate Assessment Evaluation can determine:

  • the proficiencies of the individual in the areas taught in anger management
  • family history of anger/violence
  • information regarding the actual incident that caused the arrest
  • communication style of participant
  • participant’s attitude in choices
  • empathy quotient
  • amount of stress
  • often impulse control

TESTIMONIALS (Anonymous From End Of Class Survey)

Richard is very funny and accommodates both young and older audiences. He understands and communicates very well. Today I learned I had an anger problem and Richard provided me with solutions. Thanks.

I found the class a very positive experience and provided insights to how anger works, that it can be used positively for good rather than be destructive aggressive anger. I learned about being intelligent with my emotions that I can choose better responses for better outcomes. I liked the instructor, Richard as he knew the material and was non judgmental towards everyone in the class. I was not forced to talk, but found myself participating as the material was engaging.

The class was very real and went straight to the point rather than beat around the bush. Real life stories of how people messed up making it easier for me to remember what Not To Do!

Today’s anger management class was one of the most positive things I have attended and participated in ever. Richard was very funny and open to us all attending and let us fully express ourselves as things came up. The teaching points just kept expanding layer upon layer and help me realize that EVERYONE should take this class. It was so uplifting and energizing.
I know that I will make better choices and never return. No more court ordered anger management for me!

I attended a class somewhere else and it produced very negative feelings in me. I felt accused, made to feel I was a bad person and had to admit I was the perpetrator. The fact was I was falsely accused and did nothing wrong. I am so glad I found Atlanta Anger Management. Richard was very positive and uplifting in his teaching methods. It was Anger Management, but the Anderson and Anderson curriculum was much much more. Skill enhancing information in so many areas, that I found myself enjoying the class and owning it and saying yes to the information as it was presented. I had a very good day. Glad it is over and worth the money. And now new skills to move forward. I will never be back. Richard stories reinforced that. Avoid precarious situations to avoid getting arrested.

This class was not what I expected. Started with some good coffee and immediately jumped into the material. As the day unfolded I could see that the material was really relevant to my life and I could use it in a practical way. I thought it was going to be a waste of time…but rather I felt energized by the material and Richard. I actually enjoyed myself. It was very valuable to me to attend a Saturday Class since my schedule is very busy with work and family demands. I thought it was easier to remember everything doing it in a one day class. Thanks.

I work outside and have a hard time sitting for long periods. It was great as the morning break came fast, then lunch, then afternoon break. So I did not have to sit any longer than 2 hours before I could check by phone for text message or voicemail. And got to stretch. The class material was easy to understand and with the DVDs made the day go by fast. I am glad to get this behind me.

Excellent information. Real Theory that you can really practice.

The instructor really knew his stuff. The day flew by and I was glad to get this behind me!

TESTIMONIALS

All the information was really helpful and useful. Richard did a great job of explaining and breaking the lessons down. The one day class was perfect for my situation due to time restraints.

I was surprised and actually like the class. I will not be coming back again!

A very helpful class. Learned things I can definitely use day to day.

It was a very laid back environment that made me feel accepted and more able to listen.
I enjoyed going over the material as Richard presented it. He made sure I understood the material.

The material was very defined and thorough. I particularly liked the self evaluating assessments that we did that help me realize my reactions to many events in my life.
As Richard said, this will give me a better handle on how to respond for better outcomes.

I like the Communication DVD and learning about spotting the different communication styles we all use. Should help me respond in a better way.

I like the One Day Class due to my working schedule. It was easier to understand the class lessons as everything flowed into the next chapter of info.

I learned how to better recognize and manage my frustration before it results in my usual anger.

Nice surprise. I thought I wouldn’t learn anything, and just do it for my probation. I actually did learn good anger control coping skills and learned I need to manage my stress better. The DVD’s were pretty good and help break up the class info. I am taking home a new attitude as a result of the class. I got my money worth.

Word of the day for me: Assertiveness

What I liked was how organized everything was. From my first email inquiry and fast response, to the subsequent follow up emails answering all my questions, the Details offered that told me everything I needed to know. Then the first part of the day, the following in the workbook, DVD’s, breaks, lunch, the facility….all surpassed my expectations. I am glad I chose Richard and his Atlanta Anger Management. It was worth the money even though I was falsely accused and got screwed by the system.

Learned that if I change my awareness of my anger response that it can be used for good rather than be destructive.

For me, this was a Divine appointment. I don’t have anger issues. But due to the police policy that someone has to get arrested it was me. I was not happy I was forced to attend this class. But after a few research Google searches I decided to attend to this class because of what I read about this class. I had to travel from over 60 miles to attend. I found it was definitely worth it. I was immediately affirmed upon arriving and opened up to Richard and his teaching style. He made me laugh and see that it is just as important to learn how anger and rage works to give me tools to respond better to other people’s anger. That was the insight. I work in a rather hostile combative work environment at a large company. Dog eat dog so to speak. This class gave me new insights and skills to deal better with the people I work with and leave my frustration at work and not dump on my husband when I get home. I am sure my husband will appreciate the new me. This is exactly what I needed.

I like being in a class with class participation. Made it interesting and I felt comfortable adding my input to class material. Richard even let me explain my knowledge of Meditation that was cool for me. ;-)

I am sick of being known as a hothead. The class will help me respond in a better way and let me become less reactive and explosive. I look forward to being the calm one.

I am writing a brief testimony about Richard Taylor’s anger management class. I attended his Saturday class, and it was a very beneficial class for me. I have always struggled with anger, but I was always able to control it. I finally let my anger get the best of me, and I got in trouble at work. I was very luck that I did not get fired. After attending Richard’s class, I was able to identify several tools to help me with my anger.

First, I was able to identify my triggers of my anger. I was also taught several tools to help control my anger. I have turned to regular exercise, taking controlled deep breaths, and excusing myself from a bad situation.

Everyone will deal with anger issues in different ways. I learned what would work best for me. I highly recommend his Saturday course. He has helped me to control my anger on a daily basis. His class will give you new insights to yourself and your anger issues.

It was great to be able to receive all the anger management information in one day due to my busy schedule, savings on gas and time. I find I do better with consolidated information learning situations rather than spread over eight weeks. Easier to retain/remember the information!

Sincerely, Steve

The class was not what I expected. I actually enjoyed it and learned something.

I liked that you told anger management stories from actual people you have seen as to what to NOT DO. Also that you had some DVD’s to watch that broke the day up.

Thanks. Hope to never see you again!

As Richard described depression and anxiety I realized I had the signs of depression. It was an
ah ha moment for me and explained why occasionally I got angry. The anger helped me get enough energy to do something and speak out. I now realized I was stuck in inaction mode. He called it Freeze. Like Fight, Flight, Freeze primal instincts. Made sense. Wow. I now have some coping skills to help myself get motivated and getting moving. I see some hope. I talked to Richard over lunch about my situation and he was open and made some suggestions that got me excited. Thanks Richard.

I enjoyed the class. That surprised me. Thanks.

Very interesting class. I learned a lot, not just about anger and managing those issues, but also behavior skills in stress management, that emotional intelligence can be learned to improve yourself and better communication skills while learning to fight fair.

Excellent information. Real Theory that you can really practice.

E-mailed to us:

Thanks Richard for allowing me the opportunity. i really enjoyed the class, and i think i enjoyed it more than the others lol that’s between you and i. and i will keep practicing the assertion skill!!! again thanks allot, and many more blessing to you guys and the wonderful corp. of A.A.M. ps. i honestly felt like family during the whole time i was there. thanks for being my mentor!!!! -Joshua

Richard knew the material and made the time go by fast.

I liked that you told anger management stories from actual people you have seen as to what to NOT DO. Also that you had some DVD’s to watch that broke the day up.

Testimonials

I really liked the fact that Richard is very active and knows his material. He has good strategies and techniques to display the information. I honestly feel the program is a success in the way the classes are run. He connects the dots and is consistent. – Tyler

I have attended three anger management classes and yours was the best!
I actually learned something. I hope to not do this again! – Matevius

I found you after attending a closer anger management class nearby. They lied to me about co pays, then made me take an assessment and tried to say I needed 15 hours of classes. What a scam. I am impressed you have ethics and say what it is. I am happy to drive farther to get a legitimate Anger Management class the courts will accept and be treated fairly and with respect. – Bobby

Thank you! It went well! My Probation officer got your email.
He received the Anger Certificate Of Completion from me. You did a great job.
I hope not to do business with you again, at least not for this!!!
Best wishes and thank you! – Alex

You are the best teacher ever. I mean it.
You took the time to give real life examples so I was easily able to understand the principle that made it easy for me to remember. And you always finished “Any questions?”
I liked that. Thanks.

I am writing a brief testimonial about Atlanta Anger Management’s anger management class. I attended the Saturday class, and it was a very beneficial class for me. I have always struggled with anger, but I was always able to control it. I finally let my anger get the best of me, and I got in trouble at work. I was very lucky that I did not get fired. After attending Sat. class, I was able to identify several tools to help me with my anger.

Richard was very friendly, down to earth and personable.

Even though I resented attending the classes because I was the victim, you made the class material interesting and I actually learned something. I now know to control myself better. My relationships are improving and I catch my negative thought now and don’t hold on for days. My mood is better most of the time. Thanks for helping me.

I liked the class.

You know your stuff. I enjoyed it. Bye.

What I like about the anger management class is that provided me with many tools to pick from that I need to change myself and things I can do to make my relationship better.

Very useful. Everything was good.

Gave us more resources for continued study.

Nothing sucked. I was surprised I enjoyed the class.

I like watching the DVD videos as I learn better from seeing/hearing.
having the workbook to follow along also was a real plus. Good job.

Coming to a corporate building with a security guard made me feel safe. You have a top notch company. I liked having access to free on demand coffee and water when I came to class. Also meeting at a conference table made it feel not so ANGER MANAGEMENT! Thanks for offering a course that exposed me to a new world of emotion control.

I did not think I had any problems with anger. But going through the class material I realized that this is all good stuff and opened my eyes to how people actually work. I now know how to respond to angry people around me. I don’t get sucked in so easy. I am still trying to master to be calm in the storm. So as you said…”anger management is keeping open to awareness.” I liked that. Thanks for your class. I liked it in the end.

I agreed with your statement “You can only change yourself, not your partner.” Made me own my part in our relationship problems. The class gave me the information to do something about me, and therefore improve my relationship and my life. Thanks.

I attended a few classes somewhere else but was fed up with their controlling nature, changing ‘the rules’ and basically jerked me around. Thanks for offering a great program that I need to get off probation. It has been a nighmare! I thank your straight forwardness, not beating around the bush. Sometimes it might seem harsh but you made me realize I do have control of myself and my own choices. This class was worth it. Time and money. I liked your honesty and integrity too.

I thought the class was great. I liked the pacing between workbook and videos. Nice TV!

I promised I would email feedback on the classes. It was a pain to attend 8 weeks of classes but doing so made the material stick. While I don’t think I have anger issues, the information and class has made me more aware of how things are working in my life and I have found I am making better choices. So I guess it worked! I don’t respond aggressively to everyone else’s issues anymore, and friend’s have asked me how I manage to remain so calm now. That was a big change for me. Thanks.
